Indicative Program/Itinerary
Darling Harbour was a source of shellfish and other estuarine food for the Indigenous people of Sydney Harbour for over 20,000 years. In 1811 it became a major port for NSW’s coastal trade and shipbuilding. In 1813 mechanised industry was established here when John Dickson imported a rotative beam engine which was used to drive flour-milling, sawmill and brewing processes. The shores of Darling Harbour quickly developed as a centre of engineering with useful Deepwater Harbour facilities. By the mid-19th century Darling Harbour had an integrated port-rail network that connected with the inland. Technological developments in refrigeration meant that in the early 1880s frozen meat and fresh milk could be transported to Sydney for the local market, and also loaded onto refrigerated ships for export. Darling Harbour ceased to function as a working port in the early 1980s, and was subject to one of Australia’s most ambitious programs of urban renewal, opening to the public in 1988.
