CANBERRA MODERN: THE SPIRIT OF THE NATION’S CULTURAL AND DEMOCRATIC LANDSCAPE, CANBERRA, ACT

Shaped by topography and grounded in visionary town planning, Canberra, Australia’s national capital, is one of the world’s great twentieth century planned city landscapes. This tour with key experts and authorities will explore Canberra’s natural and historic setting, Indigenous values, a selection of major public buildings and the outstanding city design that provides expression of Australia’s shared democratic ambitions.

This 3 day/2 night tour will include a mix of talks from and with experts & decision makers, exploration and interpretation of the spaces, places, values and stories of Canberra and it’s environment along with opportunities to experience the world-class food, wine and top tourism destinations of the region.

Itinerary

0650hrs Please be waiting at the northern end of the International Convention Centre Sydney, Iron Wharf Place for departure for your two-day tour
0700hrs Depart Sydney for coach journey to Canberra. 
  Some background will be presented on the coach journey with handouts provided. Stops will be made along the way at Bowral and Goulburn.
  On arrival in Canberra the day will include:

  • Mt Ainslie – An overview of the city by bus covering the original landscape, initial Walter Burley Griffin plan setting the city in the landscape and its ‘democracy’ intentions
  • Australian War Memorial main exterior areas and The Hall of Memory (note: time does not permit a visit to the galleries)
  • Reid Heritage Precinct drive through and short stop
  • National Capital Exhibition The Menzies era of setting up the City
  • Evening boat tour Lake Burley Griffin – discussion on discussion on the lake system by the Lake Burley Griffin Guardians and on Indigenous values with Ngunawal elder Wally Bell
  • Cocktails at the Hyatt and Dinner at On Red Red Hill
  • Evening entertainment and guest speaker – Paul Daley, author of Canberra

  • National Museum of Australia- landscape & Lake’s edge
  • Fish ‘n’ chips at the Snapper Bar
  • Shine Dome and walking tour of Australian National University (ANU)
  • University House – talk by Canberra Modern & Lake Burley Griffin Guardians – challenges, issues, application of HUL in Canberra
 

Dinner and remainder of the evening at leisure – nearby dining options can be recommended
