SHARED BUILT HERITAGE CENTRAL WEST TOUR OF NSW; BATHURST – CANOWINDRA – GRENFELL – GOULBURN

Explore the influences brought to Australia from other cultures since white settlement on this 7 day/night tour that has been designed specifically to offer ICOMOS delegates the opportunity to visit heritage sites in rural New South Wales. The tour includes historic towns, building methods in earth, wood and stone, cultural landscapes, private property site visits and meet and greet with locals.

 

 

Itinerary

0730hrs Please make your own way to the Eddy Avenue bus stop at Central Railway Station.
Only bring a small 7kg max cabin bag. Store larger luggage at your Sydney conference accommodation.
0745hrs

Promptly depart Central Railway Station for your seven-day tour (due to bus standing restrictions).

Arrive at Conservation Hut, Wentworth Falls. Enjoy views over the Megalong Valley World Heritage scenic landscape. Morning tea available for purchase (own expense).

Continue the journey west to the small township of Portland and visit the Portland painted silos, located on the site of a former cement works. Lunch (own expense).

Travelling via the small township of Oberon (lunch own expense), visit Lindelgreen Barn c1830 and Mountain View Homestead and General Store c1870, courtesy of owners and both NSW Heritage listed properties.

1830-1930hrs Enjoy a Mayoral Reception at the newly constructed Bathurst Rail Museum with a presentation by Janet Bingham, Bathurst City Council’s Manager Strategic Planning and local historian Dr Rob McLachlan. Finger food and locally sourced beverages are provided.

Depart for a full day of touring courtesy of the Bathurst Regional Council

  Visit the Bathurst Visitor Information Centre for a short welcome provided by the Bathurst City Council
 

Explore the historic township of Bathurst on a coach tour. Bathurst is the oldest inland settlement in Australia and the site of the first gold discovery and subsequent gold rush in Australia

 

Enjoy lunch and a presentation at Abercrombie House. Built in the 1870’s by Bathurst pioneers the Stewart family, Abercrombie House has been the home of the Morgan family since 1969, who have been restoring and maintaining the magnificent house and its outbuildings and grounds and sharing it with the community

 

In the afternoon enjoy a Town Square Walking Tour, taking in the historic TAFE building and finishing at the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum

 

Enjoy one hour of free time

Depart the hotel for a full day of touring courtesy of Bathurst Regional Council.

  Tour the Agricultural Research Station, or Experiment Farm as it was known from 1895 to 1964. With 11 National Trust classified 100-year-old buildings, the tour provides a fascinating insight into Bathurst’s agricultural, educational and social history.
 

Whether you are a motor racing fanatic or not, no visit to Bathurst is complete without a visit to the world-famous racing circuit, Mount Panorama, also known as Wahluu to the indigenous Wiradjuri people. At the foot of the mountain is the National Motor Racing Museum which houses a variety of motor racing memorabilia. Enjoy a presentation on Aboriginal Heritage, History of Racing at Mount Panorama and Central Tablelands Collections Facility. Lunch provided.

 

Visit Chifley Home, a house museum which served as the only marital home Ben Chifley, Australia’s 16th Prime Minister from 1945 to 1949.

Depart Bathurst and travel by coach to Canowindra via the historic township of Carcoar.

Travel to the nearby township of Cowra

  Enjoy a seminar courtesy of Centroc Regional Organisation of Local Governments at the Cowra Agricultural Facility. Hear from local government staff and historic property owners. Lunch and afternoon are supplied and an additional cost of $45 per person is to be paid directly to the venue on the day.
 

Afterwards visit the Cowra Japanese Gardens. The site of the World War Two internment camp history, today is a 5 hectare (12 acre) garden established to recognise the ongoing relationship between the peoples of Cowra Shire and Japan.

Travel from Grenfell to the small rural village of Quandialla for lunch at the Bland Hotel.

 

Visit Wentworth Homestead complex courtesy of the owners. One of the earliest farms in the District, the current homestead is Victorian updated in 1920s. Also accessible are the shed and shearers quarters. Enjoy a sheep shearing and wool classing demonstration and hear stories of the connections with the notorious bush ranger, Ben Hall.

 

Visit the timber vernacular Bimbi Post Office c1880 and remnants of this once small rural village. 

 

Visit Arramagong West shearing shed and dry land garden and enjoy afternoon tea with the owners

1800 – 1900hrs 

Return to Grenfell to explore the Railway Precinct and Railway Hotel, with a welcome reception hosted by Weddin Shire Council Mayor.  Dinner in Grenfell at own expense.

 

Return to Canowindra by coach

Visit the Iandra Castle, a homestead complex completed in 1911 using concrete.  Explore the outbuildings and complex of this private owned, NSW Heritage listed property.

Return to Canowindra via other private property visits and to see the Age of Fishes Museum.

Depart the hotel for journey to early colonial settler town of Goulburn, via the rural towns of Young and Crookwell.

 

Enjoy morning tea at the Goulburn Greek Café and discover the history of Greek cafes throughout rural Australia.

 

Spend the afternoon exploring the Goulbourn, Australia’s first inland city. 

Hosted by the Goulburn-Mulwaree Council we will explore the former Town Hall and the adaptive reuse for performing arts, the Rocky Hill War Memorial site, Goulburn Water Works 1880 stream pump site, Riversdale National Trust Historic Homestead and the Old Goulburn Brewery, designed by Australia’s first government architect, Francis Greenway.

Travel from Goulburn to Sydney via the historic village of Berrima in NSW Central Highlands.  Tea break at own expense.

2100hrs

Arrive Central Railway Station in Sydney and conclude the tour.

Sydney accommodation is not included in the tour.  Please make your own arrangements for accommodation on this night.

  • Accommodation (as specified where possible). NOTE: due to rural events occurring over the same week and limited supply, provisional bookings have been made but must be confirmed 3 months prior. Accommodation selected can not be changed or upgraded.

Restrictions/Accessibility:  

  • Will involve walking, walking over uneven ground and for extended periods. Will involve steps.
  • All sites and accommodation will not have lifts. Whilst will try to obtain 1 or 2 ground floor rooms if available, this can not be guaranteed.
  • Max 7 kg luggage per person because there is limited space in the 6 person (including volunteer driver) ‘people mover’ hire vehicles. Leave bigger luggage in your Sydney hotels.
  • Bring enclosed and comfortable walking shoes. Please note participants should not wear open footwear or sandals on rural properties or in the bush.
  • Bring comfortable casual clothes, long sleeves against the sun and insects, sun hat, water bottle, sun screen.
