WORLD HERITAGE PROSPECTS: THE ADELAIDE PLAN, SYSTEMATIC COLONISATION & THE CORNISH DIASPORA – SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Adelaide was designed as a 19th Century colonial experiment, mixing social ideals and commercial outcomes. Its design is intact and speaks to utopian ideals.  As a counterpoint, the colonial era mines and towns of Burra and Moonta, in regional South Australia, are a living part of the Cornish diaspora. Tour highlights include: City of Adelaide tour, Burra and Moonta historic mine site and town tours; world heritage discussions and a world renowned Barossa Valley wine experience.

Adelaide – the Adelaide Plan and Systematic Colonisation
The Adelaide component will take you on a tour of the expansive Park Lands, Squares and the generous Terraces and well-ordered streets of the City, immersing you in the planning outcomes of the social and political reform movement of pre-Victorian England.

Cornish Diaspora

The regional component will explore the potential trans-national World Heritage value of the Cornish diaspora, celebrated in the National Heritage place colonial era mining towns of Burra and Moonta, South Australia.

The tour will involve visiting both mine sites and will explore and experience the unique heritage values of the 1840s-1870s colonial township of Burra. A workshop will be convened to discuss issues associated with the feasibility of serial listings, the impact of such listings on the community and the benefits of heritage listing to the world community. World Heritage advisers will attend to enable the conversation.

Burra is also the home of Australia’s world-renowned Burra Charter, the guiding document for heritage management in Australia. A discussion surrounding the Charter and its impact within the world heritage conversation is proposed, lubricated by fine wine from the first-class surrounding Clare Valley region.

Barossa Valley settlement landscapes

Following the Moonta and Burra component you will have an opportunity to explore the settlement landscapes of the Barossa Valley and taste the living delights of this renowned wine region.
